Alpha Lipoic Acid
To learn more alpha lipoic acid and its benefits, the Wellness Advisor spoke to Rachel Agnew, RD, our Food and Nutrition Expert about the benefits of this mighty antioxidant.
Wellness Advisor: What is alpha lipoic acid?
Rachel Agnew: Alpha lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant that is both water and fat soluble. Antioxidants fight free radicals which can harm the body and age it prematurely. It is involved in vital energy-producing reactions in the body. ALA is metabolized into dihydrolipoic acid, or DHLA, which also possesses antioxidant activity.
WA: What are the chief benefits of ALA?
Agnew: As a powerful antioxidant, ALA limits oxidative damage that otherwise could contribute to or accelerate various health conditions. ALA appears to participate in the recycling of other important antioxidants such as vitamin E and C, CoQ10, and glutathione. In addition, ALA has been associated with enhanced energy production and anti-aging capabilities.
WA: Is ALA especially important if you have diabetes?
Agnew: Yes. Persons with diabetes may experience increased levels of oxidative stress and damage. The antioxidant activity of ALA and DHLA may limit or slow the development and progression of diabetes related complications. ALA has been particularly linked to slowing the development and progression of diabetic neuropathy. ALA may enhance glucose uptake and increase insulin sensitivity in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
